KOLOBOK

Maryland Art Place (Baltimore, MD), 2023
Multichannel installation, custom wooden frames, epoxy raisin

Kolobok is a popular folktale in the Slavic countries including Russia, Ukraine, Serbia, and Croatia. In Kolobok, an old man asks his wife to bake kolobok (bread). She is out of flour, so she must look for it in her boxes and bins. She finally bakes the bread and puts it on the windowsill to cool down. Surprisingly, Kolobok comes to life and jumps out of the window. Rolling around, Kolobok travels and meets a hare, a wolf, and a bear who try to eat him. However, Kolobok distracts them with a magic song and rolls away. When Kolobok meets the fox, she tricks him: pretending that she cannot hear the song, she asks him to jump on her nose. Once Kolobok jumps there, the fox eats him.
